New work, spring break and other odd musings...

Spring break was idyllic. I parked my hind end on the beach and watched the whales surface and spout, a wonderful family of sea lions swam by and stayed all day in the cove playing.   My crew and I found baby eels, starfish, hermit crabs, and a little fish that amazingly enough looked some what like Nemo.

The weather man had called for rain all week and in keeping with tradition of Juneau weather forecasters was absolutely wrong.   It was sunny all week long. I think I may have even gotten a tan!  Now that we have gotten back to the daily grind the rain has set in.  So I have been working away in the shop creating new pieces.  It's a great way to spend a rainy day.

Well now I'm off to finish filling orders.  Don't forget to use the coupon code SPFFRIENDS to enjoy 10% off anything in the shop!  Until next time. ~Angie~

Where are Slugs when you need them?

This weekend we were out at beaches for hours on end.  Going in and out of the icy cold water your feet tend to get cold quickly in XtraTufs and Hunters.  I could have seriously used a pair of Slugs that are made near here in Ketchikan by Those Alaskan Girls. They are fleece liners for rain boots to keep toes toasty and warm.  They have a new location on Etsy at  www.withtherain.etsy.com

Are these not the greatest invention for people who have to live in their rain boots?

So this weekend we went to three different beaches, and it was sunny all three times. What a great way to kick off spring break.  Enjoy the pictures and make sure to check out With The Rain's new shop on Etsy.  Follow the link above and it will take you right there.  Enjoy! ~Angie~
I'm pretty sure his internal thermometer is broken, how he sits in that icy water looking for treasure is beyond me.
But he's still smiling and never complains when he get's wet so what more could you ask for?
 Our very loyal pooch, Reuben.

Look what the tide dragged in!
His xtratufs were still wet from yesterdays outing so I had to be the pack mule.
About lost him right here :)

 Aren't we the motley crew?
Great kick off to spring break!  Keep checking in to see what other fun stuff we find to do this week.  Until then!

Ring, Ring, Ring A Ding!

So here is what I've been up to lately....Rings!  These are made from antique iron barn nails.  They are not easy to forge let me tell you.  But they really are worth it, even though by the end of the day my arms have felt like they were about to fall off I have truly enjoyed making these.  I'll be making more but for now here are the first three...

The three images above are my newest ring.  They are made from scrap brass and the antique barn nail.  I've riveted the brass to the nail.  This piece will be in a give away sometime soon on the KraftyKash blog.  I'll let you know when that is so you can enter.

These 4 images are of a ring I made to be gender neutral.  So guys or girls would look good in this piece.  It has copper riveting for decoration and has the nail head still on it.

And these last two images are of a simple ring I made from brass scraps and an antique barn nail. To see more of this one you can view it for sale in my Etsy shop @ www.steampunkfunk.etsy.com
I just had to throw in a little artsy fartsy pic because I do so love photography. :)
Don't look too closely to my hands because I'm sure you will see the poor beating they took this week trying to make these silly rings. Enjoy All!

What I'm working on...

So I have a couple of new pieces I will be adding to Etsy soon.  My inspiration came from a photo I took a few years ago in the fall.
I am a HUGE fan of old trucks. I love everything about them, my dream car is not shiny and new but beat up, not working and made in the 50's or earlier.    So came my new piece in honor of my dream car.
My other piece is apart of a spring line I've been creating all about sparrows.   So this one is a little different from the rest because his little heart is cut out.
All of my work is handmade by me, using scrap metal, old watch gears and parts and anything I can find.  I use a riveting technique to attach the watch gears.  Most of the metal has scratches and imperfections as it is so I add to it by texturing using various texturing hammers.  This is all in a days work...Enjoy!

Embattled Little Sparrow

In the mornings, I have adorable little sparrows that fly down to the deck and peck at the bird seed scattered around.  Lately though, large blue jays have been bullying the little birds who ultimately end up sitting on the fence watching the big birds eat all the food.

One morning while I was drinking my coffee seeing this little scenario play out I got this funny idea in my head. What if all the little sparrows showed up in full battle armor ready to fight the blue jays?  Wouldn't that be a sight?   They might just have a chance if they had metal armor. So I decided to take my idea out to the garage to work on a new piece. This is what I came up with and have dedicated it to all my little sparrows that sit on the fence.  ~Angie~

Wonderful Weekend!

Well this weekend was just as perfect as perfect can get.  Sleeping in (Lawlar family sleeping in usually means we get to sleep until 7:30 or 8 am)  is a huge thing for us on Saturdays and Sundays, and we relish every time we get to.  It is on these mornings that we all gather in the kitchen and figure out what family breakfast we are going to make, generally it's a fight between waffles or pancakes.

After the commotion of breakfast we get ready to head out to some location we've never been, or back to a family favorite...Sunshine Cove.  The kids love the rope swing that takes them WAY too high for my comfort and we all find little treasures in the tide pools. Our dog Reuben LOVES the beach, it's his time to run free and since he's a bird dog he also enjoys retrieving sticks or balls from the water...most of the time...well actually it's more of a crap shoot as to whether or not he will retrieve it for you.  He has a mind of his own.

We did end up going to one new spot yesterday and really had a great time.  We had a heart thumping moment though, we were walking through the woods on our way to the beach, beside us was a large river that was iced over.  At first I heard cracking sounds, and then HUGE splashes and major cracking sounds. I was freaked, because first of all, we are newbies to Alaska, and second, we didn't have bear spray.  I seriously thought we were going to come across a territorial grumpy bear that just woke up from his winter's nap.  Fortunately for us, it was the ice just breaking off making huge splashes.  Could have fooled me.

When we got onto the beach I could see where all that ice was going to.  Needless to say, I will be carrying bear spray from here on out, we found a new place to play and hike and the weekend turned out to be just lovely.  ~Angie~
