Well this weekend was just as perfect as perfect can get. Sleeping in (Lawlar family sleeping in usually means we get to sleep until 7:30 or 8 am) is a huge thing for us on Saturdays and Sundays, and we relish every time we get to. It is on these mornings that we all gather in the kitchen and figure out what family breakfast we are going to make, generally it's a fight between waffles or pancakes.
After the commotion of breakfast we get ready to head out to some location we've never been, or back to a family favorite...Sunshine Cove. The kids love the rope swing that takes them WAY too high for my comfort and we all find little treasures in the tide pools. Our dog Reuben LOVES the beach, it's his time to run free and since he's a bird dog he also enjoys retrieving sticks or balls from the water...most of the time...well actually it's more of a crap shoot as to whether or not he will retrieve it for you. He has a mind of his own.
We did end up going to one new spot yesterday and really had a great time. We had a heart thumping moment though, we were walking through the woods on our way to the beach, beside us was a large river that was iced over. At first I heard cracking sounds, and then HUGE splashes and major cracking sounds. I was freaked, because first of all, we are newbies to Alaska, and second, we didn't have bear spray. I seriously thought we were going to come across a territorial grumpy bear that just woke up from his winter's nap. Fortunately for us, it was the ice just breaking off making huge splashes. Could have fooled me.
When we got onto the beach I could see where all that ice was going to. Needless to say, I will be carrying bear spray from here on out, we found a new place to play and hike and the weekend turned out to be just lovely. ~Angie~
