Hi Everyone!
Did you know how simple fresh pesto is to make? Me either! I was reading one of my go to blogs (17 Apart) because quite honestly they are two cool birds living in one very cool town and have a house in a historic district....you just can't beat that. So they had this video that I will post below on how to make fresh pesto. After watching it, I just cannot believe I EVER bought store pesto.
Now I slightly adjusted the utensils I used because I haven't a fancy schmancy cutting board nor do I own an ulu. I am quite embarrassed to say that last bit out loud because I live in Alaska where tons of beautiful ulu's are handmade, there really is no excuse not to have gotten one yet. I used my food processor on low to chop and mix everything up.
So for tonight's dinner, I'm making simple pasta and homemade pesto along with a good crusty bread. A perfect choice for a winter's night and carb binge. Enjoy the video!

A Cup Of Cocoa At The Base Of The Glacier
Hi Everyone!
This weekend was pure bliss. We sucked it up, put on our outdoor thermal gear and headed out to the glacier...both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we made the mistake of sledding first, then trying to hike across the lake up to the glacier. Needless to say we didn't make it all the way. We had to turn around because some one...who shall remain nameless...that happens to be between the age of 5 and 7 forgot their hat, and wore the wrong gloves, and decided that his legs were not working anymore:)
On Sunday the Mr. and I decided we had to give it another shot, no funny business this time, no sledding or snowboarding the hill before, in fact we left those at home and brought our trusty L.L.Bean tube sled just for in case that certain nameless someone got tired again. We also used it to haul our coffee and cocoa. We strapped on snowshoes and away we went. 3 hours later we were back in the truck feeling the burn in our legs:) It was so much fun, we went early and there were only a handful of people out there at that time.
If you are ever in Juneau, and you should be so lucky as to visit in the winter, make the trek across the lake to the glacier, it will not disappoint.

What A Face
How can you not just LOVE that sweet little thing?! This picture makes me smile every time I see it. She looks like she's in an all out belly laugh, even the camel can't help but smile. Laughter...it's infectious, contagious, it can spread through a room like a wildfire...just ask a kindergarten teacher.
I think I need to find the artist of this picture (because I could only find this on Pinterest) and order a great big print of this to hang in my house. So when I need a little pick me up I can look at that adorable little being enjoying life to the fullest and be reminded that laughter really is the best medicine life could offer.
Date Night Was Awesome!
Hi everyone!
The sun has arrived in Juneau, in the winter that means you swap rainy for bitter cold, but I don't care. I'm just happy it (the sun) decided to grace us with it's presence. We decided that we needed to head out the road to Sunshine cove... a personal family favorite. The waves were HUGE! To stand on the rocks and feel the power in those tossing waves was something else. It makes you feel very small, and very happy to be on dry ground :)
My camera battery was no match for how cold it was and died shortly after arriving:) Time to buy a new battery.
Last night was date night and my turn to cook. For the record, our date nights are held here at the house for the most part. We take turns planning it all out and it has to be a dinner that neither of us has ever had. So for mine I started out with stuffed mushrooms (you can find the recipe here) that turned out to be absolutely deadly...seriously. I have personally decided NOT to step on the scale until tomorrow because I think I gained 5 pounds from dinner.
Then I made spicy seafood linguini for the main course. I could not find fresh mussels like I wanted (we have red tide here so you SHOULDN'T pick ones from the rocks and reef around town) actually, the people at the seafood counter looked at me like I was crazy when I asked. So I found some frozen in a garlic butter sauce that paired nicely with my homemade tomato sauce.
This was my favorite part of the whole dinner. I could have eaten it till I was sick, the Mr. said his favorite was the stuffed mushrooms. Then to top it off we had these....
David Lebovitz is probably one of my favorite cook book writers. Every recipe I try of his comes out pretty well. Now macarons are an art form in and of their pretty little selves so not every cookie came out looking like it should. But I plan on making them again next week to perfect them. We enjoyed our cookies with a little night cap of Knob Creek....so good.
What I love most about Date Night isn't the food actually, I mean it's a plus don't get me wrong, but the best part is getting that quality one on one time with my very best friend, my favorite person in the world. Not having to shout a conversation over Phineas And Ferb, not being interrupted by little fingers poking your side saying "Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom..." not having to be a referee for disagreements and not having to contend for time with my husband is priceless. That is what Date Night is all about. We ended the night off watching one of our (I think it's more one of my favorite shows than his) favorite shows...Flying Wild Alaska. If anyone in Juneau thinks our weather and isolation is bad needs to watch this show and realize we have NOTHING to complain about :)
All in all it was an awesome weekend. And we have a week full of sunshine ahead of us. You can't beat that.

First Time You Tuber
Okay so I've never done You Tube before, but decided I would give it a shot because a lot of fun things in our Alaska adventures happen on video camera. Here is video of a recent sledding expedition. SO. MUCH. FUN! My whole body hurt the next day from hitting so many bumps, that and all three kids were piled on top of me going down the hill at break neck speeds :) Enjoy!

Date Nights Are Back!!!
Hi everyone!
A couple of years ago right around this time we were looking at the schedule seeing how often the Mr. was going to be out of town for public accounting. Seriously spring time was known as the widow maker in public accounting firms because of how little we saw them (spouses working for said public firms) from the stretch of late January to April/May. So we decided we needed to "schedule" date nights once a month just so we could get some quality time to catch up and talk. To make it more fun, we would get a gift (cap of 15 -20 dollars I think) for each other and we took turns planning out the night. We also stated that dinner would be something neither of us had made or had before.
Well fast forward 2 years and we are still talking about that stretch of 6 months of date nights. It was so much fun, dinner was always amazing and the quality time we had together was exactly what we needed to make it through being apart for so long. So last night the Mr. and I decided to start it again. As the kids get older and have activities going 3 different directions it get's harder and harder to get that quality time in.
Since I'm addicted to Pinterest that is exactly where I'm getting my meal plan for the first date night. I'm thinking something like spinach artichoke stuffed mushrooms for starters, some fancy pasta as the main course and for desert, salted caramel macarons:) Yummmmm!
I'll post pictures on the big day!

A Few Of My Favorite Things...
Hi Everyone!
Lately I have been caught too many times browsing on Pinterest. I find recipes, DIY ideas, and the thing I have been enjoying the most is all the home decor and design ideas. I used to keep my "Dream House" ideas and clippings in a folder, but with Pinterest I can find tons more on the internet and keep them all organized and filed right there.
A lot like my work, my ideal dream home isn't a brand spanking new construction. Don't get me wrong, those houses are great and beautiful but they lack what I hold dear. A story, a history... old beams that have held a roof over generations, held their dreams. Houses that have seen wars, depression, baby booms, good times and sad times.
I LOVE the history in historic houses, like those old southern plantation mansions, antique barns, carriage houses, old fire houses, old stone churches. My dream house is to find something like that and have it remodeled, but with much of the history and craftsman details maintained and restored.
I think this happens to be one of the coolest upcycled ideas I've seen in a long time. They took something old with a story and gave it another chance. I just love stuff like that. When browsing decor I realized my tastes lean towards Scandinavian designs and decor. Slightly modern with rustic touches. Of course my decor presently is more eclectic than Scandinavian but I plan on picking pieces up here and there and slowly getting my style focused.
The first piece I can't wait to get is by an Etsy seller. Urban Wood Goods is one of my very favorite Etsy shops run by Erin Norton True. She has gorgeous furniture pieces that she creates from wood pulled from old barns and century old buildings. Not only are they sustainably cool but they have that industrial vibe I do so love.
I have shown my husband her work a couple of times, thinking he would pick up on my hints and just buy me the darn piece. But seeing how I know he reads my blog I'm not beating around the bushes this time. Honey, I love Erin's work. Please click on the picture above and buy it for me when ever you feel like being generous :) Thank you, Love Ang
Here are a few more pictures that have gone into my Around About The House folder.
If you are not on Pinterest....you need to be. Feel free to email me at steampunkfunk@hotmail.com if you need an invite (The one downside to Pinterest) and I will email you one.
Until next time!

Banner for Emmaline Bride
Hi everyone!
So I've been working on my banner for Emmaline Bride. I think I have settled on this particular one....I think, but who knows I could change it again with in the next 30 minutes after I've thought over it a bit. Here is a peak...

Beautiful Things...
Every once in a while I come across things that just match my personality and what I strive to be. I found two in the past week that I thought I would share with you.
I LOVE this painting done by an artist for Mercedes. The right side depicts me perfectly, especially the line that says I Am Everything I Wanted To Be.
I am the right brain.
I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion.
Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter.
I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feet.
I am movement. Vivid colors.
I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas.
I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel.
I am everything I wanted to be.
The Left is the exact description of my husband.
I am the left brain.
I am a scientist. A mathematician.
I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear.
Analytical. Strategic. I am practical.
Always in control. A master of words and language.
Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers.
I am order. I am logic.
I know exactly who I am.
He even made the comment that it's so weird how two people completely opposite could end up together. I don't really care how, I'm just glad we did:)
The second thing I found that I just fell in love with and am planning on putting in a nice font and blowing it up to hang somewhere in my house is this quote by Audrey Hepburn...
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you will never walk alone
People, even more than things have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed.
Never throw out anyone.
I have to say that is probably one of the most beautiful quotes I have ever come across. Yep, gonna blow that up big in my house on a canvas. I hope you all have a wonderful week!

New Work and Announcements
Hi Everyone!
So now that 2012 has arrived, I've already got some news for Steampunk Funk. First I have teamed up with Emmaline Bride to become one of the Featured Artisans for their Handmade Bride Guide. I am super excited to reach another audience and expand my work to other areas.
And second I have been contacted by Co-op 28 in L.A. to represent my work in their shop. They are interested in the Mens line and over the next couple weeks I will be making the items to ship down to them.
I am currently trying to roll out some new designs for Valentines Day. Here is the newest piece.
This ring is made with brass scraps, saddle straps, and my handmade copper rivets. I first cut out the heart from the brass, make the rivets and attach it to the leather then hand sew the leather together. It is not water proof so I suggest taking it off before you head to the the water park :)
Until next time!

Ready Or Not Here It Comes!
Happy New Year! I hope you welcomed 2012 in safely last night. My husband and I celebrated 11 years of married bliss...even though our anniversary is actually on the 30th. Friday night was just too much fun, we toasted to life, love and good company with two very sweet friends, Mike and Erin from Mike +Erin Alaska Diaries
1. First and foremost I want to keep craftsmanship and quality the number one priority in my business.
2. I want to hit 500 sales, I am currently at 221
3. I exceeded the amount of money I expected to make in 2011 so I'm raising the number for 2012.
4. I want to maintain my blogging and try to write more posts in 2012.
5. To continue to expand as much as one girl shop can.
Aren't they just the cutest couple?
Yesterday was filled with sledding and snowball fights, peels of laughter when everyone jumped on the same sled and hung on for dear life cooking down the driveway. It is moments like those that I hope our kids will remember when they are adults, when they think back on the childhood we provided for them it is my wish that a smile comes to their face.
Now that 2012 has arrived it's time to map out the year. My work and home life are so much better if I have a plan set. I have the tendency to bounce around with projects and ideas if I have not set boundaries for myself. I have been dubbed a "ping-pong" a time or two. I will say this for myself, I have gotten better...mostly because I have put forward a very concerted effort to stay focused on the task at hand.
So in my last post I had said it was time to set new goals for my business and my life in general but I failed to mention what those actually were. I have a few, some that I will keep to myself and some that I will share.
Steampunk Funk Goals
2. I want to hit 500 sales, I am currently at 221
3. I exceeded the amount of money I expected to make in 2011 so I'm raising the number for 2012.
4. I want to maintain my blogging and try to write more posts in 2012.
5. To continue to expand as much as one girl shop can.
Angie's Goals
1. Maintain goal weight (2 years ago I decided that too much cooking with butter, cream and wine was the reason for a weight gain so my goal was to lose it...which I did)
2. Keep shop hours (8-4:30 weekdays) so I can spend more quality time with my kids and husband.
3. Go to Haines and Whitehorse this summer.
4. Do more camping trips.
5. Try very hard not to get mad when my Bronco's lose, or when I read a negative article about Tebow.
6. Try very hard to just stay away from negative articles on Tebow.
7. Try very hard not to get mad when my Longhorns lose.
8. Last but not least, to make 2012 a better year than 2011...which will be really hard because 2011 was a LOT of fun.
So there are some of my goals, now you can hold me accountable and I will give updates periodically on my status.
I hope you rang in 2012 with some goals as well and I sincerely hope and wish that this next year exceeds your expectations.
